Destination Governor’s Beach

On our first morning in Cyprus, we wanted to visit a nearby beach and the front desk staff at our hotel in Limassol highly recommended we check out one called Governor’s Beach. My LonelyPlanet guidebook on Cyprus also wrote favorable things about this beach so we jumped into the car and started out on our first day’s adventure.

Along the way we stopped in a neighborhood to double check we were headed in the correct direction. Choosing a nearby police station to do this, Verse created quite the commotion as he entered. While I sat in the car wondering what was taking so long he was old talking and laughing with the friendly officers who wanted to know what brought him all the way to Cyprus, about his life and his music. One officer even took out his cell phone to take a picture of him to show his son who loves reggae music and Bob Marley.

Reassured we were heading the right way we got back on the highway and soon arrived at the beach. Verse saw the beach first, as I of course had stopped to take photos. With both of my eyes occupied I heard him gasp and say “Hurry up. You have to see this. It’s incredible!”  We were blown away! It wasn’t just the deep blue colour of the clear water but the surrounding landscape of the beach was just so different than what we see in the Caribbean. The beach had darker sand, there were no palm trees or other greenery bordering the beach and a huge white rock was jutting out into the ocean. With light shining off of the rock the white colour became too bright for your eyes after a while! A few sunbathers had already occupied the large rock at this portion of the beach so we decided to walk to another section. Governor’s beach’s large stretch of shore line is divided into several coves so a little further on we found an empty cove all to ourselves. A private section of the beach is exactly the way I wanted to start off my birthday trip! The sun was hot but the water was still very cold due to the time of year. We still had a swim, as the sun was hot enough to not let our bodies develop hypothermia! Verse swam to another cove and did some exploring as I lay in the sand drying in the sun. I closed my eyes and gave thanks for being there. The only thing that made us leave that lovely beach was our growing hunger.

Close to where we parked the car there were two restaurants to choose from. Being a non fish-eating vegetarian always means fewer choices when eating out and the first restaurant only had seafood on offer. The second one, Kalymnos Fish Tavern, proved to be the winner due to their pasta option.  Munching on our food we marveled at how stunning the beach had been and couldn’t help but anticipate what else Cyprus had in store for us.

After asking for directions we quickly checked out this abandoned house
Outside the abandoned house: Left, Snails completley cover this dry piece of brush. Right, Wild flowers grow out of the cracks of the rock

Verse enjoyed the ocean and I enjoyed the sun on my skin!
